Corinne Cowan is a Canadian writer and the author of ‘Go Quietly Now.’ Her work has appeared in Lobstick and Our Canada magazines. On January 1, 2005, she awoke from thoracic surgery with paralysis of her right vocal cord. With a background in Business Administration, self-employment, and studies in Psychology, she now spends her quiet time reading, writing, and painting. The sudden onset of this disability led to an early retirement and an end to her many projects, dreams, and active lifestyle.
For four decades, Corinne enjoyed a full and busy life, busy in the best possible way. Operating her own business, bookkeeping for her husband, raising their children, and helping to maintain their home left little free time. When she turned forty, she closed her home-based business and returned to university to study psychology. Corinne and her husband have two adult children and four grandchildren.
Life took an unexpected turn when thoracic surgery resulted in the loss of her voice. What once felt manageable became overwhelming, as the strain affected every part of her being. Without a voice, she struggled to be the wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and most importantly, the friend she longed to be. ‘Go Quietly Now’ reflects the patience, faith, and acceptance she learned to adopt, revealing her strength and ability to carry on after a life-altering experience.
“This is a book of hope and encouragement for anyone facing hardship.”
The universe has its way of shaping us in unexpected ways. When we dwell on our struggles, we often forget to count our blessings, but gratitude can change how we see everything. When Corinne was first faced with Vocal Cord Paralysis, she did not know how to accept this new reality. Yet, in the silence and stillness that followed, she found space to reflect, to grow, and deepen her faith. Her losses were transformed into an awakening of consciousness in a miraculous way.
With a lifelong love for writing, Corinne took this moment as an opportunity to tell her story. Through an online support group, she connected with others facing similar challenges and came to understand that everyone felt a need to be heard and seen. Their stories inspired her to consider writing this memoir. The message in this book is that hope, personal responsibility, and faith are anchors in life’s storms. She hopes readers will experience a deep self-awareness and be encouraged by her personal sharing.

Go Quietly Now is a good read and it’s thought-provoking. But more than that, this is a Canadian-made autobiography about life. I can give it no higher praise than this: I would recommend this book by Canadian author Corinne Cowan to my kids. Challenge convention, ask questions. Push the confines of so-called conventional wisdom and institutions. Embrace your journey, be brave. And don’t ever forget, the obstacles we all face often toss us to the other side with gits – enlightenment, self-awareness or humility.

This book grabbed my attention on page one and kept me intrigued and invested right to the last word. Corinne has bravely written to her intense personal journey with a ‘paralyzing’ physical ailment and her own ‘dark night of the soul’.
Corinne freely shares her frustration and challenges with the whole medical system as well as the hardships of everyday living with no voice.
Her deep introspective, from childhood innocence and church doctrines to present and the inner peace she has embraced is inspiring on very level.
In spite of the fears, the struggles, the isolation, the loneliness and all the life changes, Corinne has lived her journey with grace.

Go Quietly Now was an amazing and deeply moving read. I never fully realized how important it is to have a voice that is heard until reading this book. The author shares her real-life experience of losing her voice due to a health condition with honesty and vulnerability, and it truly stayed with me. It made me profoundly grateful for my own health and for things we often take for granted. A powerful, eye-opening story that I’m so glad I read.

As W.B. Yates says,
It reflects the heart of Go Quietly Now. When the outside world grows quiet, we begin to hear our inner voice more clearly. When life forces us into silence, we begin to see things we often overlooked before.
